Humanism

All of the elements of humanism are shown through Galileo’s life. The most prominent elements being that a person should have an “open, curious and questioning mind” and that people should use the “power of reason to find the truth.” When Galileo found the phases of Venus, he knew light source had to be reflecting light on Venus and that Venus had to be orbiting something other than earth as a foreign object would be the cause of the phases. Galileo used reason to figure out that the only object which could fit both the categories was the sun. As well Galileo should curiosity when he explored further reaches of the solar system to find the moons of Jupiter, questioning even himself on his beliefs on the heliocentric theory. When he found the moons of Jupiter orbiting something other than the earth he proved Ptolemy’s theory wrong and increased the amount of evidence supporting the heliocentric theory.

This image depicts Galileo’s first experiment where he dropped two balls made of the same material but had the balls had different masses both balls when dropped landed at the exact same time!

This image shows the Galilean moons which Galileo had found.

Achievements

Galileo influence, on science and the world is nothing short of extraordinary. With the scientific method Galileo Galilei changed how science was done. No longer would it just be beliefs which dictated the world, Galileo made the scientific method making it so a scientist would have to prove their beliefs, making for a world with more hard facts rather than weightless predictions. When Galileo reinvented the telescope Galileo revolutionized astrology. Now rather than astronomers using weak telescopes with a 1.5 times magnification. Galileo’s model made it so astronomers could see the world in a much closer manner. Galileo was a genius and the “father of science”, who knows without Galileo we might still be guessing on how the world works rather than proving it. As well with Galileo we might have never found moons as the telescopes used before Galileo’s were the equivalent of weak binoculars.

The world at                                                                                                                                                          Galileo's time was still believing that the moon                                                                                                                                                    was perfectly spherical. Personal Life

Galileo was born to mother Giulia de Cosmino and musician father Vincenzo Galilei he had a brother named Michealangolo and a sister named Virginia, he had many other brothers and sisters but they did not survive childbirth. Galileo adopted his father’s Lute playing skills and his beliefs on well made experimentation and the importance merger of mathematics, science and life. He studied at the Camaldolese Monastery as a child hoping to one day become a famous musician like his father, this was very much his passion as he would spend his free time as a child practising his Lute. If Galileo was not pushed to get a medical degree by his father he would most likely have been Lutenist and be more music based rather than science based. When Galileo grew up he had went to the university of Pisa to get a medical degree, after his father discouraged him to join the music industry. However, Galileo pursued a career in science after figuring out how pendulums work, thus creating the base work for clocks using pendulums. Galileo then met Marina Gamba although they never married they together had 2 daughters Maria Celeste and Arcangela and a son named Vincenzo. Galileo, was then later tried for herecy, in the trial he was forced to give up his beliefs on the heliocentric universe and be given freedom or be burned alive and stay with his beliefs. Galileo admitted the earth is the center of the universe. However he was still thrown into house arrest for the rest of his life. As well when he released his journal the “starry messenger” many Europeans supported the pope on his views on the “starry messenger” and how it is herecy. Many Europeans even were bold enough to give death threats to Galileo.

Personal Life Continued.

Galileo made his mark on the world not by his beliefs or his voice, but rather his character. Galileo had a reputation of being a quiet and focused person, he would only speak when he needed to, and spent most of his time on his inventions or experiments. He was known for being very kind as whatever extra money or food he had he would give to the poor. He would always be accepting of other's ideas and known to be modest, kind but also a bit combative. However, Galileo made his mark on the world through his achievements, Galileo made the fundamental work for clocks when he discovered how a pendulum works. He also found the moons of Jupiter orbiting Jupiter, proving not all objects revolve around the Earth. As well Galileo created one of the first thermometers, which used density to predict the weather. this is Galileo pendulum this was how Galileo figured out how pendulums work. by creating and experimenting on his own pendulum Galileo indirectly created the base work the mechanical clock or grandfather clock

Analysis

Galileo has many inventions and ideas under his belt like the thermometer and the scientific method, but by far his strongest invention would have to be the telescope. Although Galileo himself never made the telescope, he refined by using a different lens combination. The original telescope was an instrument of war which would be used on battleships to spy on the enemy. However, when Galileo pointed this device in the sky he could see blurry lines on the moon. To figure what these lines or cracks where he decided to make his own telescope. He used higher power lens and a long brass tube and made his own telescope. When he pointed this to the moon he saw the cracks to be valleys he also found mountains and craters. He published his findings in a journal called the “starry messenger” proving the moon wasn't a perfect spherical object as everyone else thought. Galileo remade or innovated the telescope, making it not an instrument of war but an instrument of science. The Galilean telescope was popular amongst scientists as they could now look at the stars in full clarity and with the right magnification.

Explored worldview=Society

Galileo originally couldn't care much for politics at a young age it seemed the only thing that interested him was science and his Lute. However, when he wanted to conduct higher and more expensive experiments the Medici family came. Francois the 2nd patroned him. This is when Galileo first knew how powerful families were in Florence. Galileo saw the horrors people went through to get power and decided it was inhuman and wrong however, he did not speak out because if he did he would lose his patronage. He played nice with the Medici showing them his work and his profit to maintain trust, and never spoke out against them. When he was tried for herecy for his beliefs on a heliocentric universe Galileo was sentenced to house arrest, while in house arrest expressed his opinions on how authority should be given to leaders with virtue, not popes who strictly base their decisions on their interpretation of the bible.
